Viera Wetlands is Brevard Counties Wastewater Treatment Facility. It is large manmade area of different bodies of water referred to as “cells”. Depending on the time of year you can find various species here. Waders and some raptors will be around year round as will Sandhill Cranes. Many different species of waterfowl will migrate in during the winter months as will other raptors. Bald Eagles, Hawks, Cara-Cara, Barred Owls are all fairly common. Black-bellied whistling ducks have been nesting here during the late spring and summer. Hooded Mergansers are amongst the common waterfowl that migrate here in the winter. Alligators, Otters, Racoons and Frogs are some of the other more non avian subjects you will find.
There is a loop road that you drive around and pull off when you want to photograph. You are free to walk through also. Be aware many species here are not as tolerant to human movement as in other areas of Florida.
The following link will take you to the Brevard County website which has a brochure and map about the facility. http://www.brevardcounty.us/usd/brochure.cfm
Directions: From I-95 exit on Wickham Rd. (exit 191) and head west for a couple of miles. Wickham road will dead end at the entrance to the Water Treatment Facility. Go through the gate and the wetland area is in the rear.
